CFP®: The CFP® designation is issued by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. To earn the credential, each candidate must have a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university and three years of full-time personal financial planning experience. In addition, candidates must take the CFP® Certification examination and complete a CFP-board registered program or hold an accepted designation, degree or license. Every two years, a CFP® practitioner must complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education. More information regarding the CFP® designation can be found at www.cfp.net.
CRPC™: Individuals who hold the CRPC™ designation have completed a course of study encompassing pre- and post-retirement needs, asset management, estate planning and the entire retirement planning process using models and techniques from real client situations. Individuals must pass an end-of-course examination testing their ability to synthesize complex concepts and apply them to real-life situations. All designees agree to adhere to the Standards of Professional Conduct and are subject to a disciplinary process. Designees renew their designation every two years by completing 16 hours of continuing education, reaffirming adherence to the Standards of Professional Conduct, and complying with self-disclosure requirements.
ChFC®: The ChFC® is offered by The American College. To receive the ChFC® designation, individuals must successfully complete all courses in your selected program, meet experience requirements and ethics standards, and agree to comply with The American College Code of Ethics and Procedures. The Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) designation is obtained by completing 6 core, 2 elective courses and a final exam for each course. As a prerequisite, the advisor must have 3 years of full-time business experience within the 5 years preceding the award. This designation requires 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
CLU®: The CLU® is offered by The American College. To receive the CLU® designation, individuals must successfully complete all courses in your selected program, meet experience requirements and ethics standards, and agree to comply with The American College Code of Ethics and Procedures. The Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) designation is obtained by completing 8 core, 3 elective courses and a final exam for each course. As a prerequisite, the advisor must have 3 years of full-time business experience within the 5 years preceding the award. This designation requires 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
CFA®: The Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) charter is a globally respected, graduate-level investment credential established in 1962 and awarded by CFA Institute — the largest global association of investment professionals. To earn the CFA charter, candidates must: 1) pass three sequential, six-hour examinations; 2) have at least four years of qualified professional investment experience; 3) join CFA Institute as members; and 4) commit to abide by, and annually reaffirm, their adherence to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.
CEPA®: The CEPA® designation is awarded by the Exit Planning Institute. The candidate must complete a 5-day M.B.A.-style program concluding with a proctored exam, plus meet experience and education requirements. To retain the CEPA® designation, the designee must obtain 40 hours of Continuing Education every three years and remain in good standing with the Exit Planning Institute.
CRPS®: CRPS® is a professional designation awarded by the College for Financial Planning to professionals who complete a self-study program, pass an exam, and agree to a code of ethics. The program covers the types and characteristics of retirement plans, plan distributions, plan design and implementation, and fiduciary issues. Every two years, CRPS® professionals must complete 16 hours of continuing education and pay a fee to continue using the designation.
APMA®: The Accredited Portfolio Management Advisor, APMA®, designation is awarded by the College for Financial Planning. Individuals who hold the APMA® designation have completed a course of study encompassing client assessment and suitability, risk/return analysis, investment objectives, bond and equity portfolios, modern portfolio theory, and investor psychology, with hands-on practice building portfolios and making asset allocation decisions. Individuals must pass an end-of-course examination that tests their ability to synthesize complex concepts and apply theoretical concepts to real-life situations. All designees have agreed to adhere to the Standards of Professional Conduct and are subject to a disciplinary process. Designees renew their designation every two years by completing 16 hours of continuing education and complying with self-disclosure requirements.
ADPA®: The Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor, ADPA®, designation is awarded by the College for Financial Planning. Individuals who hold the ADPA® designation have completed a course of study encompassing wealth transfers, federal taxation, retirement planning, and planning for the financial and medical end-of-life needs of domestic partners. Individuals must pass an end-of-course examination that tests their ability to synthesize complex concepts and apply theoretical concepts to real-life situations. All designees have agreed to adhere to the Standards of Professional Conduct and are subject to a disciplinary process. Designees renew their designation every two years by completing 16 hours of continuing education and complying with self-disclosure requirements.
BFA™: The Behavioral Financial Advisor, BFA™, designation, is an online program developed by think2perform in partnership with Kaplan Financial Education. The program consists of two courses — Behavioral Advice and You, and Behavioral Advice and Your Clients — covering core financial planning concepts alongside behavioral science, and equipping advisors to identify and address the psychological and emotional factors that influence clients’ financial decisions. Candidates complete approximately 20 to 30 hours of coursework and must pass a 100-question certification exam within 150 days of registration. Designees maintain the designation by completing 20 hours of continuing education every two years.
CDFA®: The CDFA® designation is awarded by the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts (IDFA®). Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and have three years of relevant experience, or five years of relevant experience without a degree, and must complete a comprehensive course of study covering the financial aspects of divorce, including asset division, taxation, and settlement analysis, before passing a certification exam. Candidates agree to adhere to the IDFA Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility. To retain the CDFA® designation, designees must complete 24 hours of continuing education plus 2 hours of ethics education every two years and pay an annual fee to remain in good standing with IDFA.
ChSNC®: The ChSNC® is offered by The American College of Financial Services. To receive the ChSNC® designation, you must successfully complete all courses in your selected program, meet experience requirements and ethics standards, and agree to comply with The American College Code of Ethics and Procedures. The Chartered Special Needs Consultant (ChSNC®) designation is obtained by completing a three-course program covering special needs planning, government benefits, legal structures, and long-term financial strategies, with a final exam for each course. As a prerequisite, the advisor must have five years of relevant professional experience, or four years combined with a bachelor’s degree. This designation requires continuing education every 2 years under The American College’s Professional Recertification Program.
Certified Military Financial Advisor®: The Certified Military Financial Advisor® certification is offered by Dalton Education (developed originally in partnership with Ameriprise Financial). To obtain this certification, candidates complete a self-study program of 14 modules (approximately 22 hours) covering the benefits, planning considerations, and life circumstances unique to active-duty service members, veterans, and their families, pass a comprehensive examination, and agree to abide by Dalton Education’s Code of Ethics. Continuing education of 8 hours every two years is recommended to maintain the certification.
Certified Financial Fiduciary®: The Certified Financial Fiduciary® designation is awarded by the National Association of Certified Financial Fiduciaries (NACFF®). Candidates must hold a current, active financial services license in good standing, have a clean regulatory and disciplinary record, and pass a full background check. Candidates complete NACFF-approved fiduciary training and pass a certification exam, and agree to uphold the NACFF Code of Conduct and the principles of Good Faith, Care, and Loyalty. Designees must complete ongoing continuing education to maintain the designation.
